Chapter Seventeen

Leo had barely given him permission to move before Jace had Sara scooped up into his arms and he and Caleb were striding toward the door. Jace knew he wouldn’t have much time before the pack came calling for him. He’d be expected to resume his position in the pack, and if he couldn’t subdue his instincts, he’d be forced to fight and kill his own twin brother.

The thought had his muscles tensing, and Sara whimpered as he squeezed her too tightly. The bruising that was on her body was extensive where they had drawn her blood. It was obvious they’d been rough with her, even if they’d intended otherwise, and she hadn’t showered while she’d been held captive. Her scent was pungent to his complex senses, but Jace was convinced she was the best thing he or his wolf had ever smelled.

“Jace, do you know what you just agreed to?”

“Shh, Caleb. Let’s get Sara somewhere safe so we can make sure she’s okay.” Sara clung tighter to him, refusing to loosen her grip long enough for him to put her in the truck. “You drive.” He slid into the vehicle, keeping Sara on his lap.

“How could you just agree to what they wanted? Do you really understand what it means?”

“Shut up and drive, Caleb.” He stroked Sara’s hair. “I know what it means, so just be quiet.” Hot tears stung his eyes, and he squeezed them shut to stop them from falling.
